Government’s
Regiments’ Proposals No Surprise
“Keep Our Scottish Battalions” campaign say Secretary
of State’s announcement is exactly as predicted.
The Keep Our Scottish Battalions campaign today said that the Secretary
of State’s statement in the House of Commons contained nothing
new for the embattled Scottish regiments. Despite the sop of retention
of regimental names and other minor concessions, it is clear that
all of Scotland’s six infantry regiments are to be disbanded
and reformed into one new regiment, to be called the Royal Regiment
of Scotland.
Campaign spokesman Brigadier Allan Alstead said: “The Secretary
of State’s announcement changes nothing as far as we’re
concerned. It is deeply disappointing for all our serving soldiers
and their families. But our campaign continues. In particular, the
Secretary of State recently received a submission from our campaign
asking important questions which require to be addressed before
any amalgamation of the Royal Scots and King’s Own Scottish
Borderers can proceed. We look forward to his reply”
